Awesome Baked Beans without Brown Sugar

These awesome baked beans without brown sugar are still tangy-sweet and delicious.  You won’t miss the brown sugar.


  • 1. Soak beans overnight in cold water in the refrigerator
  • 2. Drain and rinse beans
  • 3. In a 4 quart cast-iron casserole, cook bacon until crisp
  • 4. Add chopped onions and garlic, sauté until softened about 2 to 3 minutes
  • 5. Add drained pinto beans, stir to combine, then add enough water so the beans are fully covered
  • 6. Bring beans to a boil while preparing the seasoning liquid
  • 7. Whisk together molasses, maple syrup, Dijon mustard, dry mustard, Worcestershire sauce, cider vinegar, tomato paste, salt and pepper in a bowl
  • 8. When the beans are boiling, stir seasoning liquid into the beans, bring to a boil again, and reduce heat so the beans simmer
  • 9. Cover and cook 3-4 hours on stovetop until beans are tender
  • 10. For extra concentration of flavors, bake the cooked beans uncovered in an oven preheated to 450 degrees for about 20 minutes
